Focus and Scope

SEE is an international, open-access, peer reviewed journal that provides a venue for high-quality research conducted in all settings and contexts relevant to engineering education, with an emphasis on contextually rich reflective discussions of issues and approaches important to engineering education researchers and practitioners.

SEE focuses on interpretive research paradigms and invites a wide range of studies that help expand the body of knowledge in engineering education, including ethnographic, anthropological, phenomenological, and other forms of empirical research, as well as literature reviews and theoretical or conceptual articles that seek to frame critical issues in the field. Studies can be conducted in any context relevant to engineering education, including K-12, higher education, classroom settings, and the engineering workplace.

To support an intellectually vibrant vision of the field, SEE encourages rich and thorough descriptions of all aspects of research, including theoretical frameworks, epistemological underpinnings, researcher backgrounds and perspectives, impacts of contextual factors in data collection, research quality, and other appropriate aspects.

To promote dialogue among scholars, the journal also welcomes respectful and productive commentary & response pieces that engage individual articles and authors in deeper discussions of the implications of the work.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published online as annual volumes with two issues per year. Articles are made available as soon as they are ready to ensure that there are no unnecessary delays in getting content publicly available. Issue 1 begins on January 1 each year. Once a sufficient number of articles appear online as determined by the Editors (typically 6-8), the first issues will close and the second issue begin. The second issue closes December 31.

The journal may also opt to publish one or both issues as a special issue centered on a specific theme; in such cases, all articles in the special issue will appear online at the same time.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. There is no embargo on the journal’s publications. Submission and acceptance dates, along with publication dates, are made available on the PDF format for each paper.

Authors of articles published remain the copyright holders and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, and share the article according to the Creative Commons license agreement.

Archiving Policy

The journal’s publisher focuses on making content discoverable and accessible through indexing services. Content is also archived around the world to ensure long-term availability.

Annotation and post-publication comment

The journal platform permits readers to leave comments on the publication page, via the Disqus service. Readers will need a Disqus account to leave comments. Comments may be moderated by the journal; however, if they are non-offensive and relevant to the publication subject, comments will remain online without edit.

The journal platform also includes in-browser annotation and text highlighting options on full text formats via Readers will require a account to create annotations, and will have the option to make these publicly available, available to a group, or private.

Advertisement policy

The journal only displays advertisements that are of relevance to its scope and will be of interest to the readership (e.g. upcoming conferences). All advertising space is provided free of charge and the editor and publisher have the right to decline or withdraw adverts at any point. Adverts will include a text heading to make it clear that they are adverts not related to the journal.
